There’s something elemental in the way Beatrix Kiddo refuses to die as she slaughters and maims in her quest for revenge through Volumes 1 and 2 of Kill Bill. For a few minutes, I couldn’t look at her as a person when she punches her way through a coffin and crawls out of several feet of tightly packed earth. It’s credit to Tarantino that he then cuts to a man quizzically looking at a dusty figure making its way across a parking lot. In those few seconds, we are pulled out of the movie, forced to truly look at Beatrix in awe and ask ‘What are you?!’ Only to have this superhuman angel of violent death coolly look at us and ask for a glass of water. In that beautiful and shocking moment, we are reminded that she is but flesh and bone.
